What XCare Members Say About Claims

In their own words: XCare members on filing a claim and getting repairs paid.

Easy to work with. Both from an end user and from Tesla's end per the Supervising tech. Called XCare gave them my list of issues, scheduled appointment via app. Took vehicle in. Tesla determined faults, sent estimate and received approval same day. Tesla did repairs. Notified XCare and received corporate CC number, remaining balance due was $100. No issues.

James StarostaTesla Motors Club Members

I was unaware that the Tesla service department in Orland Park was honoring XCARE and submitting the repair claim on my behalf. I was so happy when they said, "Don't worry, we'll take care of the paperwork." I only had to pay my deductible, and they said XCare pays us fast.

Ralph P.Purchased XCare Through Dealer

I bought an XCare warranty for my Tesla. The guys were great. Buying was easy, as expected. I had no problems with claims. Had two door issues with my Model X and both times I just emailed the claims team, sent them the invoice, and they paid. I have to admit I always have some trepidation dealing with insurance companies but they were very communicative and helpful. Good product, good people, good service.

Eugene LeeTesla Motors Club Member

In my case, the overall experience was great. Tesla was willing to work with me to follow the XCare process, and XCare was able to get in touch with the Tesla Service Center directly to make the payment during service hours.

Edy T.XCare Member circa 2025

I’m so appreciative Brent helped purchasing XCare after my Tesla warranty expired with my 2017 model X because there were not too many trustworthy warranty companies unless you extend Tesla warranty at Exorbitant premium when I was shopping around. More over Brent has been helping me with claims every single time , probably more than five times and if he was not available he would connect me to other representative. No other warranty company has that kind of service I cannot thank Brent enough as he was extremely professional, didn’t mind going extra miles to help me Whether I had flat tire or mechanical issues with my Tesla . If XCare offers extended warranty after 100,000 miles I’m definitely buying it. Now that there are lots of Tesla drivers out there they should consider extended warranty and I highly recommend XCare.

Tesla Model Y Warranty Coverage and XCare Protection

See what your Model Y factory warranty covers, what happens when it ends, and how Tesla Vehicle ESA compares with XCare Premium.

Your Model Y’s basic factory warranty ends at 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The high-voltage battery and drive unit have a separate warranty that usually lasts longer. Your battery can still be under warranty when you’re responsible for a failed touchscreen, steering rack, or A/C compressor.

Tesla Vehicle ESA and XCare Premium both cover qualifying failures of major vehicle components. They differ in which parts are included, where you can get a repair, and how you pay.

  • Suspension & Steering. The most common Model Y repair we pay.
  • Touchscreen & Computer. The screen, the car computer and its cameras.
  • Heat Pump & A/C. Heating and cooling for the cabin and the battery.
  • High-Voltage Battery. The costliest single part on the car.

Your battery mileage limit depends on your Model Y’s configuration, so check it in the Tesla app before comparing dates. A Model Y can leave its basic warranty years before its battery warranty ends.

This table compares the U.S. Tesla Vehicle ESA with the XCare Premium base contract. Included means the factory part is within the plan’s scope for a qualifying failure. A failed touchscreen assembly is different from cracked glass, and a failed A/C compressor is different from an excluded hose. The agreement issued for your vehicle, including state amendments, controls.

XCare does not cover cosmetic defects. That includes paint, body panels, bumpers, door seals, weather stripping, and glass.

High voltage battery eligibility

At purchase, the vehicle must be within the current model year or the seven preceding model years, have fewer than 100,000 miles, and have a battery thermal management system. The claim must meet the contract’s battery breakdown and capacity requirements. A Model Y can qualify for Premium without qualifying for high-voltage battery coverage.

If you only want battery and drive unit protection, compare XCare Battery & Drive Unit Only with Tesla Battery ESA. Tesla Battery ESA is a separate purchase for eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles still within their original battery and drive unit warranty.

The expiration mileage in an XCare quote is the odometer limit for that contract. It is separate from the mileage at which you can buy the contract and from the purchase mileage requirement for high-voltage battery coverage.

When Tesla factory coverage still applies

If Tesla’s factory warranty should pay for a repair, start with Tesla. XCare excludes costs that should be covered by a manufacturer warranty, recall, or dealer assistance program.

For example, if your Model Y’s basic warranty has expired but its battery warranty is still active, take a qualifying battery issue to Tesla first. A failed touchscreen is a separate repair: if no Tesla warranty applies, it can be evaluated under your XCare agreement.

Should I get an XCare quote while my Model Y is still under warranty?

If you plan to keep your Model Y past its basic warranty, check your options while it’s newer and has fewer miles. That can mean more plan options or a lower price, depending on your quote. Buying early does not change which repairs Tesla is responsible for. Compare the XCare start and end dates with your remaining Tesla warranties so you can see how much protection extends beyond what you already have.

XCare lists towing, portable EV charging, flat-tire changes, fluid delivery, and lockout assistance. It also provides reimbursement for qualifying meals or lodging when a covered breakdown leaves your vehicle inoperable more than 100 miles from home, subject to contract terms. A tow gets your Model Y to a shop; the repair agreement determines whether the failed part is covered.

Limits on XCare repair payments

For one breakdown, the base contract caps payment at the lowest of the vehicle’s actual cash value just before the breakdown, the equivalent J.D. Power valuation, or the repair cost calculated using national labor and parts guides.

Across the full contract, the cap is the lowest of the vehicle’s actual cash value at sale, the equivalent J.D. Power valuation, or the vehicle sale price shown in the contract, excluding tax, title, and license fees. These caps are calculated before any applicable deductible.

Paying for XCare through Affirm

Pay for XCare in full or apply to pay over time through Affirm. Tesla’s monthly ESA payment keeps a subscription active. Affirm payments repay the purchase of a fixed-term XCare contract. Your loan payment schedule and coverage term are separate.

Affirm financing is subject to eligibility. Review the cash price, APR, payment schedule, and total amount payable. Compare plans over the same ownership period, including financing charges.

Cancellation and transfer

Early refundFull refund if you cancel before coverage starts.XCare publishes a full refund during the 30-day waiting period, subject to applicable contract and state terms.
Later refundAfter coverage starts, Tesla gives no refund in most states; some states allow one, such as California within 60 days, minus claims paid. There is no prepaid multi-year balance to refund.A prorated refund is available when the contract’s refund terms are met.
Selling the vehicleTesla has a separate process for eligible transfers. The contract determines eligibility, paperwork, deadlines, and any fee.

Canceling XCare does not by itself settle an Affirm balance. Confirm who receives any refund and whether anything remains due. If you want the buyer to keep coverage, check transfer eligibility before canceling.

Starting a repair claim

Start your claim online with the XCare claim form. For Tesla repairs, your agreement also directs you to call 877-302-1715 before repairs begin to register the claim and get instructions. Have your contract number, current mileage, and a short description of the problem ready.

Once the shop identifies the failed part, the administrator reviews the diagnosis and estimate. Wait for authorization before approving the repair. If the repair is covered, you’re responsible for your deductible and any charges the agreement doesn’t cover.

Tesla Model Y warranty questions

Can I buy Tesla Vehicle ESA after the basic warranty expires?

Check the Tesla app before it expires. Eligibility depends on the vehicle and warranty status. Tesla describes an inspection requirement where applicable, and qualifying pre-owned coverage can affect when ESA starts.

Can I buy XCare for a used Model Y or one already out of warranty?

Yes. Eligible vehicles can qualify after factory coverage ends, including vehicles bought from a dealer or private seller. Vehicle age, mileage, title, and use restrictions apply.

Does a drop in range qualify as a battery claim?

A drop in estimated range alone doesn’t establish a covered battery breakdown. Tesla’s factory warranty has a capacity retention provision. XCare applies its own eligibility, breakdown, and capacity terms.

Can I buy XCare to cover a problem my Model Y already has?

No. A new contract excludes breakdowns that occurred before or during its 30-day waiting period.

Does XCare pay for routine maintenance?

No. XCare excludes routine maintenance and items such as brake pads, rotors, tires, and wheels.

Does XCare cover cosmetic defects?

No. XCare does not cover cosmetic defects of any kind, including paint, body panels, bumpers, door seals, weather stripping, and glass.

Can I restart Tesla Vehicle ESA after I cancel it?

Tesla says re-enrollment is available within the same billing cycle as cancellation. Don’t assume you can restart it months later.

Who can buy XCare Premium

Eligible new and used Model Ys can qualify, including vehicles purchased from a dealer or private seller. Start with your model year and current mileage. Title and vehicle use restrictions also apply. Purchase eligibility is separate from high-voltage battery eligibility and from the mileage at which coverage ends.

Call (866) 584-1307
What does an extended warranty for the Tesla Model Y cover?
XCare Premium covers nearly every major system on the Model Y, including the drive unit, and the high-voltage battery when the vehicle is under 100,000 miles and no older than the current model year plus 7 at purchase. It also covers electronics, suspension, steering and climate control, with 24/7 roadside help, rental and rideshare reimbursement and trip interruption. Cosmetic defects, glass, paint, body panels, wheels, tires and the 12-volt battery are not covered.
How much does a Tesla Model Y extended warranty cost?
For a 2025 Tesla Model Y with 10,000 miles and a $100 deductible, XCare Premium is $3,005 for 6 years and 75,000 miles and $3,775 for 8 years and 100,000 miles. Your price depends on the year, the miles and the plan. Pay in full, or 20% today and the rest over 11 monthly payments.
How long is the Tesla factory warranty on the Model Y?
Tesla covers the Model Y for 4 years or 50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper and 8 years or 100,000–120,000 miles, depending on version on the high-voltage battery.
What does the Tesla battery warranty cover on the Model Y?
Tesla covers the Model Y’s high-voltage battery for 8 years or 100,000–120,000 miles, depending on version; the warranty guide on this page shows what else that warranty includes. After that, battery repairs are yours to pay. XCare Premium covers the battery past the factory battery warranty when the Model Y is under 100,000 miles and no older than the current model year plus 7 when you buy, and the XCare Battery & Drive Unit plan covers just the battery and drive unit.
Should I get an extended warranty on a used Tesla Model Y?
A used Model Y keeps whatever is left of Tesla’s factory warranty, which ends at 4 years or 50,000 miles for most parts, so check the in-service date and miles before you buy. XCare covers used Model Ys too, with the battery included when the car is under 100,000 miles and no older than the current model year plus 7 at purchase. Get a price with the year and miles of the car you’re looking at, so you know the cost of protecting it before you buy.
When is the best time to buy?
While the Model Y is newer and before it reaches 100,000 miles. 79% of the EV claims filed with XCare arrive after 50,000 miles, and past 100,000 miles the battery is no longer included and the longest plan is 4 years / 50,000 miles. Use the timeline tool on this page to see your own dates.
Does XCare work alongside Tesla’s warranty?
Yes. XCare starts 30 days after purchase and runs alongside the factory warranty, not after it. While Tesla’s coverage lasts, Tesla pays for what it covers, and XCare covers eligible breakdowns it doesn’t.
Do I have to use a Tesla service center?
No. You can use any licensed repair shop certified to service EVs, Tesla service centers included.
Can I transfer or cancel my plan?
Sell it privately and you can transfer the plan to the buyer for $50 within 30 days of the sale, with your maintenance records; plans can’t transfer through a dealer trade-in. Cancel within the first 30 days for a full refund if no claim has been paid. After that, the refund is pro-rated by the days or miles used, whichever gives the smaller refund, less a $50 fee and any claims paid.
How do I file a claim?
Call 1-877-302-1715 to register your claim before any repair; Tesla repairs without that call aren’t covered. Send the estimate to the claims administrator and wait for authorization. The administrator then pays the shop, or reimburses you, for the covered work, less your deductible. Keep your service records: claims and transfers can need them.
