Understanding the ownership journey beyond the factory warranty.
01
Many Tesla owners keep their vehicles well beyond the factory warranty, making long-term repair planning an important part of ownership.
02
While routine maintenance is generally low, certain high-value components can become expensive to repair as vehicles accumulate mileage.
03
Once factory coverage expires, unexpected repairs become the owner’s responsibility. Many owners explore coverage options before reaching that point.
04
Tesla EVs combine advanced battery systems, electronics, software, and mechanical components. Specialized coverage can help protect many of these components throughout long-term ownership.
Tesla covers most of your car for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Tesla owners file more XCare claims than any other brand, and most of them come after that. What Tesla covers, and for how long. XCare runs alongside it and keeps going after it ends.

In their own words: XCare members on filing a claim and getting repairs paid.
Easy to work with. Both from an end user and from Tesla's end per the Supervising tech. Called XCare gave them my list of issues, scheduled appointment via app. Took vehicle in. Tesla determined faults, sent estimate and received approval same day. Tesla did repairs. Notified XCare and received corporate CC number, remaining balance due was $100. No issues.
I was unaware that the Tesla service department in Orland Park was honoring XCARE and submitting the repair claim on my behalf. I was so happy when they said, "Don't worry, we'll take care of the paperwork." I only had to pay my deductible, and they said XCare pays us fast.
I bought an XCare warranty for my Tesla. The guys were great. Buying was easy, as expected. I had no problems with claims. Had two door issues with my Model X and both times I just emailed the claims team, sent them the invoice, and they paid. I have to admit I always have some trepidation dealing with insurance companies but they were very communicative and helpful. Good product, good people, good service.
In my case, the overall experience was great. Tesla was willing to work with me to follow the XCare process, and XCare was able to get in touch with the Tesla Service Center directly to make the payment during service hours.
I’m so appreciative Brent helped purchasing XCare after my Tesla warranty expired with my 2017 model X because there were not too many trustworthy warranty companies unless you extend Tesla warranty at Exorbitant premium when I was shopping around. More over Brent has been helping me with claims every single time , probably more than five times and if he was not available he would connect me to other representative. No other warranty company has that kind of service I cannot thank Brent enough as he was extremely professional, didn’t mind going extra miles to help me Whether I had flat tire or mechanical issues with my Tesla . If XCare offers extended warranty after 100,000 miles I’m definitely buying it. Now that there are lots of Tesla drivers out there they should consider extended warranty and I highly recommend XCare.

79% of the Tesla claims filed with XCare arrive after 50,000 miles, when Tesla's basic warranty ends.

Warranty guide
See what your Tesla factory warranty covers, what happens when it ends, and how Tesla Vehicle ESA compares with XCare Premium.
Your Tesla’s basic factory warranty ends at 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The high-voltage battery and drive unit have a separate warranty that usually lasts longer. Your battery can still be under warranty when you’re responsible for a failed touchscreen, steering rack, or A/C compressor.
Tesla Vehicle ESA and XCare Premium both cover qualifying failures of major vehicle components. They differ in which parts are included, where you can get a repair, and how you pay.
| Factory warranty | What it covers | When it ends |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty | Qualifying defects in components such as suspension, steering, air conditioning, and electronics | 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first |
| Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty | Qualifying battery and drive unit issues, with at least 70% battery capacity retention under the applicable published terms | 8 years or the applicable mileage limit, whichever comes first |
| Supplemental Restraint System Limited Warranty | Qualifying defects in the restraint system | 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first |
| Other limited warranties | Certain rust perforation and emissions-related components | Separate terms apply |
| Tesla model | Published U.S. factory battery and drive unit mileage limit |
|---|---|
| Model 3 | 100,000 or 120,000 miles, depending on configuration |
| Model Y | 100,000 or 120,000 miles, depending on configuration |
| Model S | 150,000 miles |
| Model X | 150,000 miles |
| Cybertruck | 150,000 miles |

This table compares the U.S. Tesla Vehicle ESA with the XCare Premium base contract. Included means the factory part is within the plan’s scope for a qualifying failure. A failed touchscreen assembly is different from cracked glass, and a failed A/C compressor is different from an excluded hose. The agreement issued for your vehicle, including state amendments, controls.
XCare does not cover cosmetic defects. That includes paint, body panels, bumpers, door seals, weather stripping, and glass.
At purchase, the vehicle must be within the current model year or the seven preceding model years, have fewer than 100,000 miles, and have a battery thermal management system. The claim must meet the contract’s battery breakdown and capacity requirements. A Tesla can qualify for Premium without qualifying for high-voltage battery coverage.
If you only want battery and drive unit protection, compare XCare Battery & Drive Unit Only with Tesla Battery ESA. Tesla Battery ESA is a separate purchase for eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles still within their original battery and drive unit warranty.
| Tesla Vehicle ESA | XCare Premium | |
|---|---|---|
| Plan type | Monthly subscription | Fixed-term vehicle service contract |
| Coverage starts | After the applicable basic or qualifying pre-owned warranty expires | After the 30-day waiting period for a new contract |
| Coverage ends | Up to 48 months or 50,000 additional miles, capped at 8 years of total vehicle age or 100,000 total vehicle miles | At the expiration date, mileage limit, or liability limit in the agreement, whichever comes first |
| Used vehicle eligibility | Depends on vehicle and warranty status. Check the Tesla app for an offer. | Eligible Teslas can qualify after factory coverage ends, including vehicles bought from a dealer or private seller. |
| High-voltage battery | Not included. Tesla Battery ESA is a separate purchase if offered. | Included in the Premium contract price for vehicles that meet battery requirements. |
The expiration mileage in an XCare quote is the odometer limit for that contract. It is separate from the mileage at which you can buy the contract and from the purchase mileage requirement for high-voltage battery coverage.
If Tesla’s factory warranty should pay for a repair, start with Tesla. XCare excludes costs that should be covered by a manufacturer warranty, recall, or dealer assistance program.
For example, if your Tesla’s basic warranty has expired but its battery warranty is still active, take a qualifying battery issue to Tesla first. A failed touchscreen is a separate repair: if no Tesla warranty applies, it can be evaluated under your XCare agreement.
If you plan to keep your Tesla past its basic warranty, check your options while it’s newer and has fewer miles. That can mean more plan options or a lower price, depending on your quote. Buying early does not change which repairs Tesla is responsible for. Compare the XCare start and end dates with your remaining Tesla warranties so you can see how much protection extends beyond what you already have.

| Tesla Service Center | Allowed | Allowed, subject to claim authorization |
| Eligible independent EV repair shop | Not allowed | Allowed, subject to shop eligibility and claim authorization |
| Before repairs start | Arrange service through Tesla. | Register your Tesla claim with the administrator and follow its instructions before approving repairs. |
Confirm that an independent shop can diagnose and repair the specific system, especially for high-voltage work. You may be responsible for inspection or teardown charges if the repair is not covered.

|---|---|---|
| Roadside assistance | Separate service under Tesla’s roadside policy. Availability and charges vary. | Included, subject to contract limits. |
| How to request help | Request assistance through Tesla and confirm whether a charge applies. | Follow your contract’s roadside instructions. Different limits apply to dispatched service and reimbursement for service you arrange. |
XCare lists towing, portable EV charging, flat-tire changes, fluid delivery, and lockout assistance. It also provides reimbursement for qualifying meals or lodging when a covered breakdown leaves your vehicle inoperable more than 100 miles from home, subject to contract terms. A tow gets your Tesla to a shop; the repair agreement determines whether the failed part is covered.

| Plan price | Monthly rate multiplied by the months you keep coverage, within Tesla’s limits | Total quoted price for the selected term and mileage |
| Deductible | Amount and per-visit rules in the Tesla agreement | Amount and per-visit rules in the XCare agreement |
| Drive unit | Not included. Tesla Battery ESA is a separate purchase if offered. | Included in the Premium contract price. |
For one breakdown, the base contract caps payment at the lowest of the vehicle’s actual cash value just before the breakdown, the equivalent J.D. Power valuation, or the repair cost calculated using national labor and parts guides.
Across the full contract, the cap is the lowest of the vehicle’s actual cash value at sale, the equivalent J.D. Power valuation, or the vehicle sale price shown in the contract, excluding tax, title, and license fees. These caps are calculated before any applicable deductible.
Pay for XCare in full or apply to pay over time through Affirm. Tesla’s monthly ESA payment keeps a subscription active. Affirm payments repay the purchase of a fixed-term XCare contract. Your loan payment schedule and coverage term are separate.
Affirm financing is subject to eligibility. Review the cash price, APR, payment schedule, and total amount payable. Compare plans over the same ownership period, including financing charges.

|---|---|---|
| When coverage ends | Normally at the end of the current billing period. Tesla also provides a way to request immediate cancellation. | On the effective cancellation date under the contract. |
| Future payments | The subscription stops renewing. | Cancellation ends the service contract. If financed, check how any refund is applied and what balance remains. |
| Early refund | Full refund if you cancel before coverage starts. | XCare publishes a full refund during the 30-day waiting period, subject to applicable contract and state terms. |
| Later refund | After coverage starts, Tesla gives no refund in most states; some states allow one, such as California within 60 days, minus claims paid. There is no prepaid multi-year balance to refund. | A prorated refund is available when the contract’s refund terms are met. |
| Selling the vehicle | Tesla has a separate process for eligible transfers. | The contract determines eligibility, paperwork, deadlines, and any fee. |
Canceling XCare does not by itself settle an Affirm balance. Confirm who receives any refund and whether anything remains due. If you want the buyer to keep coverage, check transfer eligibility before canceling.
Start your claim online with the XCare claim form. For Tesla repairs, your agreement also directs you to call 877-302-1715 before repairs begin to register the claim and get instructions. Have your contract number, current mileage, and a short description of the problem ready.
Once the shop identifies the failed part, the administrator reviews the diagnosis and estimate. Wait for authorization before approving the repair. If the repair is covered, you’re responsible for your deductible and any charges the agreement doesn’t cover.
Check the Tesla app before it expires. Eligibility depends on the vehicle and warranty status. Tesla describes an inspection requirement where applicable, and qualifying pre-owned coverage can affect when ESA starts.
Yes. Eligible vehicles can qualify after factory coverage ends, including vehicles bought from a dealer or private seller. Vehicle age, mileage, title, and use restrictions apply.
A drop in estimated range alone doesn’t establish a covered battery breakdown. Tesla’s factory warranty has a capacity retention provision. XCare applies its own eligibility, breakdown, and capacity terms.
No. A new contract excludes breakdowns that occurred before or during its 30-day waiting period.
No. XCare excludes routine maintenance and items such as brake pads, rotors, tires, and wheels.
No. XCare does not cover cosmetic defects of any kind, including paint, body panels, bumpers, door seals, weather stripping, and glass.
Tesla says re-enrollment is available within the same billing cycle as cancellation. Don’t assume you can restart it months later.
Eligible new and used Teslas can qualify, including vehicles purchased from a dealer or private seller. Start with your model year and current mileage. Title and vehicle use restrictions also apply.
