Air Suspension
The most common Rivian repair we pay.
Understand common ownership risks, repair trends, and coverage options built for Rivian R1T owners.
Why coverage matters
Understanding the ownership journey beyond the factory warranty.
01
Off-road trips and trail miles are hard on suspension and drive units.
02
Rivian's comprehensive coverage ends at 4 years or 50,000 miles on most R1Ts (5 years or 60,000 miles on 2022–2024 Quad-Motor models).
03
Multi-motor drive, air suspension and a software-defined cabin are costly to repair.
04
A transferable plan reassures the next buyer.

In their own words: XCare members on filing a claim and getting repairs paid.
Easy to work with. Both from an end user and from Tesla's end per the Supervising tech. Called XCare gave them my list of issues, scheduled appointment via app. Took vehicle in. Tesla determined faults, sent estimate and received approval same day. Tesla did repairs. Notified XCare and received corporate CC number, remaining balance due was $100. No issues.
I was unaware that the Tesla service department in Orland Park was honoring XCARE and submitting the repair claim on my behalf. I was so happy when they said, "Don't worry, we'll take care of the paperwork." I only had to pay my deductible, and they said XCare pays us fast.
I bought an XCare warranty for my Tesla. The guys were great. Buying was easy, as expected. I had no problems with claims. Had two door issues with my Model X and both times I just emailed the claims team, sent them the invoice, and they paid. I have to admit I always have some trepidation dealing with insurance companies but they were very communicative and helpful. Good product, good people, good service.
In my case, the overall experience was great. Tesla was willing to work with me to follow the XCare process, and XCare was able to get in touch with the Tesla Service Center directly to make the payment during service hours.
I’m so appreciative Brent helped purchasing XCare after my Tesla warranty expired with my 2017 model X because there were not too many trustworthy warranty companies unless you extend Tesla warranty at Exorbitant premium when I was shopping around. More over Brent has been helping me with claims every single time , probably more than five times and if he was not available he would connect me to other representative. No other warranty company has that kind of service I cannot thank Brent enough as he was extremely professional, didn’t mind going extra miles to help me Whether I had flat tire or mechanical issues with my Tesla . If XCare offers extended warranty after 100,000 miles I’m definitely buying it. Now that there are lots of Tesla drivers out there they should consider extended warranty and I highly recommend XCare.

Warranty guide
See what your R1T factory warranty covers, what happens when it ends, and how Rivian Care compares with XCare Premium.
Your R1T’s comprehensive warranty from Rivian usually ends years before its battery and drive system warranty. Your battery can still be under warranty when you’re responsible for a failed suspension component, screen, or A/C compressor.
Rivian Care and XCare Premium both offer repair coverage after the factory warranty. They differ in who can buy them, which items they include, and where you buy them.
Rivian’s terms depend on your motors and battery pack, so check your own warranty before comparing dates. Suspension is the most common Rivian repair we pay, and most Rivian claims arrive after 60,000 miles.
| Factory warranty | What it covers | When it ends |
|---|---|---|
| Comprehensive | Qualifying defects across most of the vehicle | 4 years or 50,000 miles on 2025 and later R1s; on 2022–2024 R1s, 5 years or 60,000 miles on Quad-Motor and 4 years or 50,000 miles on others |
| Battery and drive system | Qualifying battery and drive system issues | 8 years, and 120,000 miles on Dual-Motor Standard pack or 150,000 miles on other 2025 and later configurations; on 2022–2024 R1s, 175,000 miles on Quad-Motor Large pack, 150,000 miles on Dual-Motor Large or Max pack and 120,000 miles on Standard pack |
| 12-volt battery | Qualifying 12-volt battery defects | 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first |
| Corrosion | Qualifying corrosion perforation | 8 years |
Rivian changed these terms for the 2025 model year; your vehicle’s warranty booklet controls. They vary by model year and configuration, and earlier vehicles can have different terms. Check your Rivian warranty guide for your dates. The warranty issued for your vehicle controls.

This table shows the XCare Premium base contract. Included means the factory part is within the plan’s scope for a qualifying failure. A failed touchscreen assembly is different from cracked glass, and a failed A/C compressor is different from an excluded hose. The agreement issued for your vehicle, including state amendments, controls.
XCare does not cover cosmetic defects. That includes paint, body panels, bumpers, door seals, weather stripping, and glass.
At purchase, the vehicle must be within the current model year or the seven preceding model years, have fewer than 100,000 miles, and have a battery thermal management system. The claim must meet the contract’s battery breakdown and capacity requirements. An R1T can qualify for Premium without qualifying for high-voltage battery coverage.
If you only want battery and drive unit protection, ask about XCare Battery & Drive Unit Only.

|---|---|---|
| Plan type | Vehicle service contract administered by Assurant, with an optional Preferred Vehicle Protection plan | Fixed-term vehicle service contract |
| Coverage starts | Breakdown coverage starts after the factory warranty ends | After the 30-day waiting period for a new contract |
| Coverage ends | At the end of the plan term. Battery coverage runs to 200,000 miles | At the expiration date, mileage limit, or liability limit in the agreement, whichever comes first |
| Used vehicle eligibility | Under 8 years and 80,000 miles, bought new or Rivian Pre-Owned from Rivian, for original owners. Availability varies by state. | Eligible vehicles can qualify after factory coverage ends, including vehicles bought from a dealer or private seller. |
| High-voltage battery | Included, up to 200,000 miles | Included in the Premium contract price for vehicles that meet battery requirements. |
| Cosmetic items | Preferred Vehicle Protection lists curb rash and paintless dent repair | Not covered |
The expiration mileage in an XCare quote is the odometer limit for that contract. It is separate from the mileage at which you can buy the contract and from the purchase mileage requirement for high-voltage battery coverage.
If Rivian’s factory warranty should pay for a repair, start with Rivian. XCare excludes costs that should be covered by a manufacturer warranty, recall, or dealer assistance program.
For example, if your R1T’s comprehensive warranty has expired but its battery warranty is still active, take a qualifying battery issue to Rivian first. A failed touchscreen is a separate repair: if no Rivian warranty applies, it can be evaluated under your XCare agreement.
If you plan to keep your R1T past its comprehensive warranty, check your options while it’s newer and has fewer miles. That can mean more plan options or a lower price, depending on your quote. Buying early does not change which repairs Rivian is responsible for. Compare the XCare start and end dates with your remaining Rivian warranties so you can see how much protection extends beyond what you already have.

XCare lists towing, portable EV charging, flat-tire changes, fluid delivery, and lockout assistance. It also provides reimbursement for qualifying meals or lodging when a covered breakdown leaves your vehicle inoperable more than 100 miles from home, subject to contract terms. A tow gets your R1T to a shop; the repair agreement determines whether the failed part is covered.

For one breakdown, the base contract caps payment at the lowest of the vehicle’s actual cash value just before the breakdown, the equivalent J.D. Power valuation, or the repair cost calculated using national labor and parts guides.
Across the full contract, the cap is the lowest of the vehicle’s actual cash value at sale, the equivalent J.D. Power valuation, or the vehicle sale price shown in the contract, excluding tax, title, and license fees. These caps are calculated before any applicable deductible.
Pay for XCare in full or apply to pay over time through Affirm. Affirm payments repay the purchase of a fixed-term XCare contract. Your loan payment schedule and coverage term are separate.

| Early refund | See the plan’s own terms | XCare publishes a full refund during the 30-day waiting period, subject to applicable contract and state terms. |
| Later refund | See the plan’s own terms | A prorated refund is available when the contract’s refund terms are met. |
| Selling the vehicle | Both plans can transfer, usually for a fee | The contract determines eligibility, paperwork, deadlines, and any fee. |
Canceling XCare does not by itself settle an Affirm balance. Confirm who receives any refund and whether anything remains due. If you want the buyer to keep coverage, check transfer eligibility before canceling.
